Being Gifted actually a Gift?
A new task given by Deepthi teacher : Watch an education related movie and write about the educational insight reflecting in it. Watching movies is always refreashing and enjoyable. Since it is a task now, I need to not only just watch it but also observe it in a different way, by means of the intentions.
I chose the movie Gifted. The plot of the movie follows an intellectually "gifted" seven year old who becomes the subject of a custody battle between her maternal uncle and grandmother.
Directed by : Marc Webb
Produced by : Karen Lunder
Andy Cohen
Written by : Tom Flynn
Starring : Chris Evans, Lindsey Duncan, Mckenna Grace
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy- his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) in a coastal town in Florida. Frank's plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the 7 year old's mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank's mother Evelyn (Lindsey Duncan), whose plan for the granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.
Mary, an exceptionally bright young lady raised by Frank since she was a baby after his sister Diane, a brilliant mathematician, committed suicide. The reason for Diane's suicide was because of the pressure given by her mother upon her to be brilliant. She had no friends, love life because her mother prohibited all of that. So Frank is forced to raise Mary as a 'normal child' despite what turns out to be her genetically gifted mind.
Upon sending Mary to public school, Mary's teacher quickly realizes that Mary is gifted. Seeing opportunity with their student, the school principal reccommends Mary to be transferred to a preparatory school that will nurture her highly intellectual mind. Unfortunately, Frank refused, adamont in believing Mary should have a normal life, which prompts the school to contact Frank's mother Evelyn. She demands custody of Mary so she can give Mary a proper education. As Frank and Evely go for guardianship over Mary, Mary herself is caught in the middle trying to figure out who she liked to live with...her uncle or ther grandmother.
How we should raise a gifted or bright children is the fundamental question at the center of the movie Gifted. Moreover an educational movie, I think it also shows an emotion and the connection that an uncle has with his niece.
Many in society believe that gifted kids are born with extreme knowledge and superior skills rather than having to learn them. Gifted dispels this misguided belief that being gifted is like magic. Sadly, many believe that gifted children will be fine on their own and don’t require additional supports. This is just not true!
Gifted children need support, exposure to stimulating content, and caring adults to guide them so they may flourish on their own. This requires highly trained teachers and administrators. This movie peers into the complicated process of educating gifted children. The film is a hopeful remainder that we must not only see these children, but must understand, teach and challenge young gifted minds for THEIR sake not OURS.
