Inadequate sex education leads to develop myths and misconceptions on sexual and reproductive health.
Poor sex education may partially account for questions that reveal a lack of basic understanding about pregnancy risks in non-penetrative sexual acts and the protection afforded by different contraceptive methods.
Sex education doesn't means how to have sex but it aims to improve knowledge and understanding and to correct misconception by providing age appropriate, scientific accurate and cultural relevant knowledge.As child attains puberty there are numerous changes happen in his body and mind, here the role of sex education comes into picture. Lack of proper information makes adolescents vulnerable to many problems:
Many adolescents are unaware and unprepared to protect them from sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.
Lack of skill to refuse unwanted sex from peers or adults who use physical force or emotional pressure.
Inequitable gender norms and attitudes.
Many adolescents use wrong ways to get knowledge like pornography and this can lead to sex crimes.
Providing proper sex education is need of an hour.As we are teaching our students various skills this new subject should be added to our curriculum.This will help our youth in various ways:
It helps in promoting self awareness and norms that are equitable and respectful of others.
It will provide opportunity to discuss and reflect on feelings attitude and values.
It helps to build social skill needed to make responsible choice and carry them out by providing structured opportunities to practise those skills.
